Hello! I am Gel Santos Relos, and you may know me for my work as a news anchor, radio and television talk and magazine show host, and Op-Ed columnist in the Philippines and here in the United States. My husband is Dr. Rene Relos, a General Surgeon who recently availed early retirement and is now working part time as Traveling Surgeon so we can have more time for other things we are passionate about like traveling.
My husband and I have been together for more than 44 years, married for more than 40. Like many couples of our generation and middle class upbringing, we lived a "linear" life -- we went to college, then got married, immediately built a family, worked hard to give our children a brighter future. Somewhere along the way, we lost who we were as a couple.
Marrying at the young age of 21 and being saddled with all the responsibilities, demands, and stressors of raising our four children and our careers -- we almost lost each other, until we made a conscientious and inspired decision to re-invest in our relationship.
Re-investing in a relationship and in each other does not just mean taking big vacations and grand adventures. It also entails purposely nurturing the relationship in our everyday life -- the routine, the ordinary. What seem to be mundane moments of each day can be extraordinary, magical, and truly transformative.
We are now in our early 60s, and since availing early retirement, we have been working together as a team more than ever. Doc Rene is doing part time Locum Tenens work as a traveling surgeon, helping fill staffing needs of hospitals in different towns and cities in the United States. I am his communications and marketing executive assistant and I travel with him to all his assignments.
I have also now transitioned from broadcast and print journalism to storytelling on my digital platforms -- working on my blogs, video channel, and a travel podcast which I co-host with my husband. We talk about things we are passionate about - travels, food and wine, music, arts, movies , history, health, family, relationship and public service.
I read somewhere that to find our true calling, we have to look at our scars that remind us of our pains and struggles and how we transcended them by the grace of God.
This is at the core of what " Travels for Two" is all about.
